In May 2026, Hayden Panettiere published This Is Me: A Reckoning. It was the first time she had told the whole story herself: the addiction, the postpartum depression, the abuse, the strange childhood of a girl who was working before she could read. The book was well received. The line at her Barnes & Noble signing in Manhattan reportedly stretched out the door. In the same season she came out as bisexual and said she was sad it had taken her until 36 to say so publicly.
Three months later she was dead. Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, five days before her 37th birthday. That timing is what makes her loss feel so cruel. She had finally taken control of her own narrative, and she didn't get to live in it.

A working actor before she could read

Panettiere grew up in Palisades, about 40 miles north of New York City. Her mother, Lesley Vogel, was an actress. Her father, Skip, was a fire department captain. It was her mother who put her in commercials as a baby, and that early start shaped everything that followed, good and bad.
The good part came fast. At nine she voiced Princess Dot in Pixar's A Bug's Life (1998), and a read along album tied to the film earned her a Grammy nomination. Disney kept her busy: Suri in Dinosaur (2000), the Disney Channel movie Tiger Cruise (2004), the lead in Ice Princess (2005). In between she held her own opposite Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans (2000) and Kate Hudson in Raising Helen (2004).
Cheerleader, survivor, country star
Two TV roles defined her adult career, and they could hardly be more different.
As Claire Bennet in Heroes (2006 to 2010), she played a high school cheerleader who could heal from any injury. "Save the cheerleader, save the world" became a cultural catchphrase, and she became a household name.
As Juliette Barnes in Nashville (2012 to 2018), she did the better work. Juliette was talented, vain, wounded and often hard to like, and Panettiere made her the character you couldn't stop watching. It earned her two Golden Globe nominations, and in our view it's the performance that will hold up longest.
Horror fans will remember her differently: as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 (2011), a fan favourite who came back for Scream VI (2023). Her final role was in the direct to video film Sleepwalker, released in January 2026.
The voice the industry wouldn't let her use
She could really sing, which surprised people who only knew her from Heroes. Her Disney songs, "I Fly" for Ice Princess and "I Still Believe" for Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, got heavy rotation on the Disney Channel. Her 2008 pop single "Wake Up Call" went less well. She later said her label made her feel like "a puppet," and a full solo album never came.
Nashville fixed that. She recorded dozens of songs as Juliette over six seasons and toured to perform them live. For a lot of viewers, that was the moment she stopped being a former child star and became an artist in her own right.
Jansen
![]()
Her younger brother, Jansen, born September 25, 1994, followed her into acting, with parts in Even Stevens, Everybody Hates Chris and The Walking Dead. The siblings worked together on Tiger Cruise and Racing Stripes (2005). Later he turned to painting.
Jansen died suddenly at his New York home on February 19, 2023, aged 28. The family said the cause was cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, with aortic valve complications, and his death was ruled natural. Hayden called him her "baby brother" and said losing him felt like she had "lost half of my soul." She returned to that grief again and again in interviews, and in the memoir.
Kaya, and a choice few parents could make
![]()
Panettiere and former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko began dating in 2009 and got engaged in 2013. Their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, was born in December 2014. The couple split for good in 2018, and they never married.
What followed was the decision she was judged for most. She gave full custody of Kaya to Klitschko. She was candid that she was battling postpartum depression and addiction, and she said she believed her daughter would be safer and more stable with her father. Kaya has lived mainly with him in Europe. Plenty of people criticised that choice. We'd argue it took more honesty than most parents ever have to find.
By 2026 she described her bond with both Kaya and Klitschko as strong, and called her daughter "otherworldly and so kind and so fierce." Kaya is 11.
What the money looked like
No official figure exists, and published estimates range widely, some as high as $15 million. Icon Polls estimates her net worth at $6 million to $8 million at the time of her death.
The gross earnings were real. She reportedly made around $75,000 per episode of Nashville, which across the show's run points to several million dollars before taxes, agents and fees. Add Heroes, the Scream films, Disney work and brand deals with names like Neutrogena. But long breaks from work, three stints in rehab and legal costs all ate into it. The lower estimate fits a career that was famous but rarely steady.
August 16, and the questions still open
TMZ first reported her death, and her representative confirmed it to ABC News. Her father called it "the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden" and described her as "an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her and to the millions who watched her onscreen."
As of this update, no official cause of death has been made public. Her family has not shared medical details, and reports say a law enforcement investigation is open. She had spoken in the past about serious health warnings, including a doctor telling her she could die within five years if she kept drinking, and a 2025 nerve injury that left her with tingling below the waist. None of that tells us what happened, and we won't guess. We'll update this page if official findings are released.
What she leaves
A remarkable body of work for someone who didn't reach 37: a Pixar voice role, a cult superhero series, a horror franchise and one of the best performances network TV gave us in the 2010s. And a book in which she finally told it her way. If Juliette Barnes or Claire Bennet meant something to you, you can make her case in our poll of the best actresses of all time.
