But Gossip Girl is where she got to have the most fun. As Georgina Sparks from 2008 to 2012, she walked into a show full of schemers and out-schemed all of them. When the reboot brought her back in 2022, it was a short appearance, and it turned out to be her final credited role.

What the medical examiner found

On the morning of February 26, 2025, Lana Trachtenberg found her daughter unresponsive in her apartment near Columbus Circle in Manhattan, at around 8 a.m. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. Police said there was no sign of foul play.

Her family objected to an autopsy on religious grounds. In April 2025, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner announced that she died of complications of diabetes mellitus, and ruled the manner of death natural. That finding was based on laboratory and toxicology results rather than a full autopsy.

Reports at the time said she had recently undergone a liver transplant. The medical examiner's statement did not mention it, and the official record names diabetes complications only. Anything beyond that is speculation, and it's best left there.

The photos fans kept staring at

In her last couple of years she posted less, and some followers commented on her weight and appearance. In early 2024 she pushed back on Instagram, saying she was happy and healthy. She never publicly described a serious illness. After her death, those last images from late 2024 were shared again and picked apart.

It's an uncomfortable lesson. Strangers had opinions about her face, and none of them knew what she was dealing with. She kept her private life private, never married and had no children, and that was her right.
