The city has well over 40 moving companies chasing your business. A few have been around for more than a century. Others are barely a decade old and have grown by doing things differently. Prices, services and reliability vary enormously, so the honest answer to "who's the best?" is another question: what kind of move are you making?

Biddulphs: the name everyone mentions
Started in what is now Zimbabwe in 1928, Biddulphs has grown into South Africa's largest independent mover, with 17 branches locally plus offices in Zimbabwe and Botswana. A fleet of more than 180 vehicles means most of the work stays in house. It's a FIDI member, prices fairly for its size and rates consistently well on HelloPeter. The one caveat: some customers report communication slipping on bigger international jobs. Ask who your single point of contact will be.
Stuttaford Van Lines: 130 years of doing it properly
Founded in 1896, Stuttaford is the oldest furniture removal company in Southern Africa, run locally from Chloorkop. Membership of FIDI and the OMNI network gives it partners worldwide. Its packing teams have a reputation for patience and care. It isn't cheap. But if you want a structured, old school process with solid insurance, few do it more consistently.
Pickfords: built for the corporate transfer
Operating in South Africa since 1904 and part of the Allied Pickfords network of more than 800 offices, Pickfords is often the default for multinationals moving staff. Packing is meticulous and tracking is modern. The trade off is price, and smaller household jobs may not get the attention big corporate accounts do.
Elliott Mobility: more than a truck
Elliott, founded in 1965 with offices in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, sells the whole relocation: destination services, immigration support, property search and settling in help. For a simple suburb to suburb move it's overkill. For an employer funded transfer, it's exactly the point.
Wise Move: the one without trucks
Wise Move doesn't move anything itself. You enter your details and vetted companies send quotes. The platform reports more than 10,000 review responses for the Johannesburg area averaging 9.4 out of 10, and a Trustpilot score of 4.5. For first time movers who don't know where to start, it saves days of phone calls.
Biggles Removals: transparent quotes, familiar crews
Biggles focuses on Gauteng households, from one bedroom flats to family homes, with long distance runs to Cape Town and Durban. Quotes are based on cubic footage, which leaves little room for moving day surprises. Smaller scale, consistent teams and fair pricing make it our pick for budget conscious home moves.
JHB Removals: they actually call you back
Communication is where most movers fall down, and it's exactly what reviewers praise here. JHB Removals held a 4.7 rating on HelloPeter when we compiled this list. It's especially strong on the busy Johannesburg to Cape Town and Durban corridors. No global reach, but for leaving Joburg within South Africa, a smart call.
Master Movers: for the awkward jobs
Tight deadlines, narrow access, oversized furniture: this is where Master Movers earns its reviews. Packing, transport, unpacking and assembly come from one team, and it held a 4.5 HelloPeter rating at the time of writing. Useful for residential and commercial moves alike.
AGS Frasers: customs and diplomatic baggage
Part of the AGS Group, with more than 147 offices across 100 countries, AGS Frasers runs its South African operation from Chloorkop. Its strength is cross border paperwork: customs clearance, diplomatic shipments and expat relocations across Africa and beyond. Too much for a local move; among the best for leaving the country.
Magna Thomson: when the cargo is irreplaceable
Magna Thomson handles ordinary moves too, but its reputation rests on fine art, antiques, instruments and collections, with specialist packing to match. Relocation consultants often recommend it for anything out of the ordinary. Expensive for a basic move. Worth it when one broken piece would hurt more than the invoice.
