Every Joburg homeowner eventually asks the same question, usually at 2am with the dog barking: if I press this button, who actually comes, and how fast? Burglaries, home invasions and driveway hijackings aren't headlines here. They're the reason the gate gets checked twice before bed.
The market is crowded. Armed response fees run from around R169 to over R1,400 a month, and the gap between providers is wider than the price gap suggests. A good operator has a vehicle at your gate in minutes. A poor one might take half an hour, or not arrive at all.
How we ranked them
This is an editorial ranking built from research, not a field test. We weighed PSIRA compliance, fleet size, response reputation, control room capability, technology, customer feedback and suburb coverage. The question wasn't who's biggest in South Africa. It was who protects a Johannesburg house best.

1. Fidelity ADT: the default, and deservedly so
Formed by the merger of Fidelity Security Services and ADT Security, Fidelity ADT runs over 630 armed response vehicles nationally, backed by more than 5,000 armed response officers and 40 branches. In Johannesburg, coverage is essentially citywide.
Scale isn't the whole argument. Alarm monitoring, CCTV, smart home automation, panic buttons and armed response sit in one package run from a single control room. Armed response starts at around R299 a month, below the city average. In June 2025 it added SecureFire, a private firefighting service for subscribers, which makes real sense given how stretched municipal services are. Officers are PSIRA accredited and every vehicle has GPS tracking. For most households, this is the safe call.
2. TRSS: the specialist
TRSS came out of a 2000 merger between RSS Security Services and Tactical Reaction Services, and the tactical DNA shows. It runs over 75 dedicated armed vehicles and offers a SWAT style response few residential firms can match.
It's one of a handful of South African private security companies that is SD6 compliant, a standard well above basic PSIRA requirements, and its control room is SAIDSA compliant. Its "onion model" layers defences so each barrier makes the next harder to reach. It's strongest in the northern suburbs. You pay a premium. For a higher risk property, that's arguably money well spent.
3. Chubb: buy the hardware here
Chubb has been in security since 1818, and its South African business shines on the electronic side: alarms, fire detection, CCTV and access control, installed by skilled teams and backed by dependable monitoring. It's PSIRA registered with a national footprint.
Why third and not first? Armed response and patrols aren't its core. Treat Chubb as the systems partner whose kit you plug into whichever response provider you prefer.
4. Vision Tactical: a director who knows your name
Headquartered in Houghton, Vision Tactical has built its name in the wealthier suburbs. Its director personally oversees all clients, rare in a corporate industry. Drone support adds aerial surveillance alongside conventional armed response, and the app includes a panic button and live feed. It has expanded to Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, but Johannesburg remains its stronghold.
5. 24/7 Security Services: tech without the top tier price
Founded in 2004, the firm now employs over 3,500 people. Residential packages bundle patrols, alarm monitoring and rapid response, with an app panic button, CCTV and an emergency personal ops device that works as a mobile panic system. Its Facebook following tops 200,000, a sign of strong community visibility. It's a sensible middle ground below TRSS or Vision Tactical pricing.
6. Stallion Security: probably already guarding your estate
Operating since 1991 from Bruma, Stallion has grown to more than 7,500 staff. Its focus is corporate and high end guarding, and many upmarket estates and complexes use it for site security and access control. For a standalone house, it's pricey and not its natural fit. If you live in a managed estate, there's a good chance it's already on duty.
7. Magen Security: they pick up the phone
Customers often feel forgotten once the contract is signed. Magen's reputation rests on the opposite: quick replies and genuine responsiveness. It offers armed response, guarding, alarms and access control at rates below most big operators. Smaller, yes, but residential clients report high satisfaction.
8. Mtshoko Security: trained in house
Mtshoko runs its own security training college, so officers learn the company's standards from day one. In an industry that often leans on minimally trained staff, that matters. With more than two decades of experience, it covers guarding and technical security nationally.
9. R Protections: steady and compliant
A Level 1 B-BBEE company with over twenty years behind it, R Protections handles guarding, system installation and maintenance, and training for residential, corporate and industrial clients. It lacks Fidelity ADT's brand pull and TRSS's tactical edge, but delivers dependable service, and it's a strong pick where B-BBEE compliance matters.
10. JK Armed Response: patrols, not just alarms
JK offers 24 hour armed response, a live monitoring control room, panic buttons and CCTV, with officers tracked in real time. The draw is its patrol model: vehicles circulate rather than waiting for a signal, which deters criminals and shortens the first response. Pricing is competitive. If you're in its area, it's worth a quote, and one to watch.
Before you sign a contract
- Check PSIRA registration for the company itself, not just its marketing.
- Ask about your street, not the city. Response times vary by suburb and by where vehicles are based.
- Read what the fee covers. Monitoring, patrols and callouts are not always bundled.
- Separate hardware from response if it suits you. A Chubb system paired with a local responder is a valid setup.
