Turkish football has always loved a shortcut story: the academy prodigy, the big-money signing, the teenager sold abroad before he can drive. Barış Alper Yılmaz has none of that. He came up through the lower divisions, arrived at Galatasaray in 2021 as a project rather than a star, and spent the next few seasons making himself impossible to leave out. Rize, a restaurant and a long way round
Yılmaz grew up in Rize on Türkiye's Black Sea coast, where his father, Yüksel, ran a restaurant in their village. Barış helped out there as a boy, and he has said that if football had not worked out he might well have followed his father into the trade. It is the kind of detail that explains a lot about how he talks about his career: grounded, slightly surprised it all happened.
His football started at Rize Özel İdare Spor. In 2017 he moved to Ankara Demirspor, a lower-league club where senior minutes had to be earned rather than handed out. The real turning point came in 2020 with a move to Keçiörengücü. One season there was enough to convince Galatasaray, who signed him in July 2021 for a reported fee of about €2.1 million.
Patience in Istanbul
The jump from the second tier to Galatasaray is brutal. Pressure, crowds, quality, all of it at once. Yılmaz was not an instant starter, and for a while it was fair to wonder whether he would become a squad player who never quite broke through.

Two moments sum it up. In 2026 he shared a light-hearted video of himself dancing the traditional horon with his mother after a Galatasaray win. And when Türkiye qualified for the 2026 World Cup, he sent an emotional public message to his father about finally being able to watch the country at the tournament again. Faith and a private life
