Most budget VPS hosting starts with a tiny server and then charges you for every extra gigabyte. Contabo does it the other way round. It hands you a large fixed bundle of memory, storage and traffic for a monthly price that looks like a typo next to the big cloud platforms. In 2026, with more people self-hosting apps, running game servers and moving small business tools off expensive SaaS subscriptions, that offer has a lot of pull.
Value doesn't mean the same thing as easy, though. This review looks at what Contabo's money actually buys, where the price creeps up and who should not sign up at all.
What €4.50 actually buys
Contabo is a German hosting company founded in 2003. It sells VPS, virtual dedicated servers (VDS), dedicated servers and object storage, but the VPS line is what made its name. The Core Cloud VPS range uses fixed monthly plans, and the spec sheet is the whole argument:

Eight gigabytes of RAM on the entry plan is the headline. That's enough for a WordPress site, a private email server, a self-hosted app stack or a development box with room to spare. Storage VPS starts at the same €4.50, while VDS and dedicated servers cost more because they give you more dedicated hardware.
The bill you see versus the bill you pay
Those prices are standard European rates. Pick a data centre in the United States, Asia or Australia and a location fee may be added, with the amount depending on the product and region. Taxes come on top. Windows Server is a paid monthly licence on VPS and VDS, and you can't bring your own licence to those products.
None of this is hidden, but it isn't on the front of the box either. Check the full total at checkout before you get attached to the €4.50 figure. Many current VPS and VDS offers come with no setup fee, although some special configurations and add-ons are charged differently.
Coupon codes are mostly a dead end
People search for a Contabo coupon code constantly, and most of what turns up is out of date. Contabo doesn't appear to keep one permanent public code for everyone. Its savings come through temporary campaigns, discounted server deals, account credits, outlet offers and lower prices shown right on the order page.
So skip the third-party code lists. Look at the current homepage and deals page, then compare any offer against the location fee and billing period. A discount on a long term in an expensive region can still cost more than a plain plan in Europe.
Ordering, and the two-panel login puzzle
You don't create an account first. Signing up happens as part of your first order: you choose a product, billing period, location, storage type, operating system and add-ons, then enter your details. Use accurate identity and billing information. Anti-fraud checks can hold up provisioning if your name, address and payment details don't match.
After the order is processed, Contabo emails your access details. This is where people get confused. There are two customer panels. The original one lives at my.contabo.com, and the newer one at new.contabo.com. They can use separate credentials. You set up the new panel from inside the old one and create a different password for it, and that newer login also opens the Help Desk. If a login fails, work out which panel you're on before resetting anything. Two-factor authentication is supported, so keep the recovery codes somewhere safe. There's an account recovery route if you get locked out completely.
Core, Performance, or neither
Core VPS is built for jobs where RAM and storage per euro matter most: websites, dev environments, backups, mail and self-hosted tools. Performance VPS targets heavier CPU and disk work such as databases, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, APIs and AI tooling. You can't adjust single resources inside a plan, but you can move up to a larger one from the panel, and eligible plans accept storage extensions.
If you need guaranteed physical CPU or nested virtualization, a standard VPS is the wrong product. That's what VDS and dedicated servers are for.
Traffic, storage and the fine print
Normal use doesn't hit a simple hard bandwidth cap, but a fair-use policy applies, and very heavy or disruptive traffic can be throttled. Port speeds vary by plan, from hundreds of megabits per second up to 1 Gbit/s. DDoS protection is included across the infrastructure, which is useful but doesn't replace basic server hardening. If disk speed matters to you, choose NVMe when you order rather than hoping to fix it later.
Living with it day to day
The panel covers the essentials: servers, snapshots, rescue systems, upgrades and billing. Support runs through chat and tickets inside the customer account, and those requests get priority. Email exists for pre-sales and unusual cases. It works, but for a messy outage it can feel less immediate than a phone line would.
The bigger point is that this is unmanaged infrastructure. A new Contabo VPS is a blank machine, not a finished website. Security, software installs, backups, monitoring and OS updates are all on you.

Who should buy it
Developers, agencies, self-hosters and small businesses that already know how to run a Linux box will get more server for their money here than almost anywhere. For them, start with the smallest plan that fits the workload, confirm the location fee, stick with Linux unless Windows is truly needed, and set up backups and monitoring before any real traffic arrives.
If you've never secured a server before, the low price is only the first cost. The rest is your time. You'd likely be happier with managed hosting.
