Sevilla didn't pay a cent for Fabio Cardoso. In September 2025 they took a 31 year old centre back with seven Porto trophies on his record and handed him a three year deal. That makes him the kind of signing clubs in a squeeze love: proven, tall, available. It also makes him the kind fans side eye, because a free transfer at that age usually means the selling club had already moved on.

Leaving Agueda at twelve
Agueda is a small city in the Aveiro district of central Portugal, not a place scouts pass through by accident. Cardoso was spotted anyway. In 2006, aged 12, he moved to Lisbon to join the Benfica academy, and he worked through the club's under 15, under 17 and under 19 sides before reaching Benfica B in 2012.
Benfica's academy produces plenty of players who never break into the first team, and he was one of them. The useful part came on loan. From January 2015 he had two spells at Pacos de Ferreira, where he made 42 appearances and scored once. That was his first real taste of senior football played week after week.
He also represented Portugal at every youth level from under 15 to under 20. A senior call up has never come.
Glasgow didn't fit
A four year contract at Vitoria Setubal in July 2016 brought 23 league games in one season, and that was enough for Rangers. In summer 2017 the Scottish club paid around 1.5 million euros for him, which is still the biggest fee anyone has spent on Cardoso.
It went badly. Injuries and the physical grind of Scottish football limited him to 12 league appearances, and he was gone after a single season. For a lot of players, that's where the story quietly ends.
Santa Clara rebuilt him
Cardoso went home and signed for Santa Clara, the club from the Azores. For his career, it was the most important move he made. Over three seasons he played around 88 games and scored 10 goals. Ten goals is a serious return for a centre back. Most of them came from the kind of set piece situations where a 6 ft 2 in defender earns his keep.
He wasn't a celebrity at Santa Clara. He was reliable, and reliability gets noticed.
Porto: seven pieces of silverware
FC Porto signed him in summer 2021. In Portugal there aren't many better places for a defender to be, and the trophies arrived quickly:

- Taca de Portugal in 2022, 2023 and 2024
- Two Portuguese Super Cups
- The League Cup in 2023
That's seven trophies. He also played in the Champions League with Porto, his only extended exposure to European football's top competition. He was rarely the headline name in those squads. He was the senior squad defender who could be trusted when rotation came round, and title winning teams need players like that.
The Gulf detour and the free move
In August 2024, Porto loaned him to Al Ain in the UAE. You can read that as a club making room. When the loan finished, Porto released him, and Sevilla signed him on 1 September 2025 on a contract running to June 2028.
His early numbers in Spain were modest: four La Liga matches, 298 minutes and an average rating of 6.6 in the opening stretch of 2025/26. That's a small sample, and it shouldn't be used to judge him either way.
The profile in numbers
At 1.87 m and about 82 kg, Cardoso is built for the job. He wins headers at both ends, he tackles hard, and teammates have tended to treat him as an organiser. Across his career he has made more than 230 league appearances, with around 17 league goals and 4 assists. Plenty of centre backs finish with fewer goals than that, and most of his came the same way, attacking dead balls.
He isn't a ball playing centre back you build attacks through. He's a defender's defender, and that has an obvious shelf life once his legs start to go at 32.
Money, with the caveats included
There's no official figure for Cardoso's wealth, so treat everything here as an estimate. Icon Polls estimates his net worth at $12 million to $15 million, based on more than a decade of wages across Portugal, Scotland, the UAE and Spain.
His Sevilla salary is reported at around 2.08 million euros a year, roughly 40,000 euros a week. His Porto wages were reported at about 350,000 pounds a year, so if both figures are accurate, Spain gave him a big raise. Al Ain's pay from the loan has never been made public, though UAE Pro League clubs are known to pay well.

His value peaked at around 3 million euros during his Porto years. In mid 2026 the major valuation sites put him at about 1.5 million euros, and Icon Polls places his realistic transfer range at 1.2 million to 1.8 million euros. That's what you'd expect for a 32 year old defender with two years left on his deal. Clubs might want him for depth. Nobody is going to pay big money.
Family, kept offstage
Searches about Cardoso's sister turn up very little, and that's how he seems to want it. He keeps his family life private and rarely brings relatives into interviews or onto social media. What's on record is that his family backed him from the moment a 12 year old left Agueda for Lisbon. Anything beyond that would be guesswork, so we're leaving it there.
