There was a stretch around 2016 when Hector Bellerin looked like the future of the right-back position. He was young, absurdly quick and already in the PFA Team of the Year. A decade later the story is quieter and arguably more interesting. He's 31, he's back at Real Betis, and he's become the kind of player whose value shows up in decisions rather than sprint data.
That arc, from wonderkid to wise head, is why he's still worth paying attention to.

The boy who left La Masia
Bellerin joined Barcelona's academy in 2003 as an eight-year-old. Most kids in that system dream of the Camp Nou. He took a different gamble: in 2011, at 16, he left for Arsenal's youth setup in London.
It paid off. He made his senior debut on September 25, 2013, in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion, then spent part of that season on loan at Watford, playing eight matches. By 2014 he was a regular at Arsenal, and by 2015/16 he was arguably the best attacking right-back in England. That season brought 36 league appearances, a goal, six assists and a place in the PFA Team of the Year.
The speed was the headline. A widely cited figure had him covering 40 metres in 4.42 seconds, supposedly quicker than Usain Bolt over the same split during his 100m world record. The comparison has been argued over ever since, but nobody disputed that he was frighteningly fast.
January 2019, and what it took
Then came the ruptured ACL in January 2019 and roughly nine months out. For a player whose game was built on acceleration, it was the turning point. He came back, but the explosive edge never fully returned.
What followed was a rebuild. Bellerin leaned on positioning, timing and reading the game, the skills fullbacks usually only develop once their legs start to go. His happened early, and suddenly.
A messy middle, then a homecoming
His exit from Arsenal was untidy in the way modern careers often are:
- 2021/22: loan to Real Betis, where he helped win the Copa del Rey.
- September 2022: Arsenal ended his contract by mutual consent and he joined Barcelona as a free agent.
- January 2023: after only a handful of appearances, he moved to Sporting CP for a reported fee of around EUR 1 million.
- July 2023: back to Betis permanently, on a free.
The Barcelona chapter was the romantic one, but Betis is where he actually fits. Seville gave him a second wind on loan, and he chose to return.
His Arsenal haul still stands up: around 240 appearances across all competitions and three FA Cups (2014, 2015 and 2017), plus two Community Shields. Add the Copa del Rey with Betis and it's a respectable medal drawer for a fullback.
What he does for Betis now
The original numbers for 2025/26 had him on 19 league appearances with a goal and two assists, plus minutes in Europe and the cup. That's not a star's return. It's a dependable senior player's return, and at 31 with his injury history, that is exactly what Betis need: a fullback who knows when to go and, more importantly, when not to.
Across his career his assist tally sits above 35. For a defender, that's a quietly strong number, and a reminder that the attacking instincts never left.
Following the money
![]()
No official figure exists for Bellerin's wealth, so treat everything here as an estimate. Icon Polls estimates his net worth at $32 million to $35 million in 2026.
Most of it was earned at Arsenal. His 2016 extension was reported to be worth about $28.6 million over five years, which put him on roughly $110,000 a week at his peak. At Betis the pay is more modest: around GBP 52,000 a week by our estimate, or about GBP 2.7 million a year.
Football isn't the whole picture. He has brand partnerships, a co-founded sustainable clothing label, Gospel Estudios, and a stake in Forest Green Rovers, the English club famous for its environmental credentials.
From EUR 40 million to EUR 2.4 million
His market value tells the career story in two numbers. Around 2016 and 2017 he was valued at roughly EUR 40 million, among the priciest right-backs anywhere, with Barcelona and others regularly linked. Today Transfermarkt puts him near EUR 2.4 million.
That drop says more about age, the ACL and contract length than about his usefulness. Clubs don't pay fees for 31-year-old fullbacks. They pay for the ones who keep the dressing room steady.
The footballer who reads Vogue

Bellerin has never fit the stereotype. He went vegan in 2017 and has credited the diet with better recovery. In 2020 he pledged to plant 3,000 trees for every Arsenal win. He's walked London Fashion Week and turned up in GQ and Vogue, which made him an easy target for lazy commentary and a genuine outlier in a conservative sport.
Love it or roll your eyes at it, the activism has been consistent for years. That's harder to fake than people assume.
Private by design

For someone so open about climate and politics, Bellerin says very little about his relationships. He isn't married, there are no public reports of children, and he has never publicly confirmed the various names attached to him over the years. He keeps his private life private, and we're happy to leave it there.
Where would a player like this rank among the game's greats? Probably not near the top, but the debate is fun. Tell us who belongs there in our vote for the best football players of all time.
