Most footballers carry one flag. Ismail Jakobs has carried two for his whole career, and he has been unusually clear about which one he chose for senior football and why. He was born in Cologne, raised in German football and won the European Under-21 Championship with Germany in 2021. When it came to the full international team, he still picked Senegal, his father's country. He says that decision came from the heart. Now 27 and a fixture on Galatasaray's left flank, he is heading into the last year of his contract. That makes this a good moment to look at what he earns, what he might be worth and who he is away from the pitch.

Cologne first
Jakobs started at BC Bliesheim before FC Köln brought him into their academy in 2012. He worked his way through the youth sides and made his Bundesliga debut in 2019. Things moved quickly after that. His pace and his willingness to run at defenders got him noticed, and he could play left-back, left midfield or on the wing. Coaches like players they can fit into more than one slot.
Monaco paid a reported fee of about €6.5 million in the summer of 2021. He spent three seasons there and made more than 100 appearances across all competitions. He gained Ligue 1 and European experience while competing for the left-back spot. That's a solid record. It isn't quite the record of a player Monaco built their side around, and the next move suggested as much.
A loan with the ending already written
Galatasaray took him in September 2024 on loan with a mandatory purchase clause: a €1 million loan fee, then an €8 million obligation to buy. In practice, it was a transfer paid in two instalments. The move became permanent as planned, and Istanbul has been good to him. His time there has brought league titles, cup success and regular football for a club that expects to win most weeks.

The pay packet
Some of the money picture is reasonably solid and some of it isn't. Jakobs's estimated gross fixed salary for 2026/27 is about €2.63 million a year. That works out to roughly €50,500 a week before tax and bonuses. His contract is understood to include performance bonuses, but the structure isn't public. His real yearly income is probably above the base figure, and nobody outside the club can say by how much.
Net worth is even less certain. Icon Polls estimates Ismail Jakobs's net worth in 2026 at £6 million to £9 million. This is an editorial estimate based on his contracts at Köln, Monaco and Galatasaray, payments linked to his transfers, international football and likely commercial income. His private finances have never been published, which is why the range is deliberately wide.
The final year
His Galatasaray deal runs until 30 June 2027. His market value was estimated at about €8 million in May 2026, almost exactly what the club committed to pay Monaco. On paper, Galatasaray got what they paid for. Now they have a decision to make. A renewal keeps a left-back in his late twenties with plenty of running left in him. Waiting means his bargaining position improves every month the contract runs down. No extension or exit has been announced, so for now he is simply a Galatasaray player registered through next June.
Pace before power
At 1.84 metres he has decent size for a full-back, but nobody describes Jakobs as a physical defender. They talk about his speed. He has said he became much faster in his late teens, and that acceleration now drives most of his game:
- Recovery running when a winger gets in behind him
- Overlaps that give his team width down the left
- Ball carrying into midfield and beyond
- Versatility, after earlier spells as a left midfielder and winger
That range makes him a natural fit for teams that switch between a back four and wing-backs during a match. A left-footer who can defend the channel and then turn up as an auxiliary winger is worth more to a manager than his transfer fee suggests.
Why Senegal
Jakobs could have waited for a senior Germany call. He didn't. He has said that Senegal represents his father, his family and an important part of his own history, and that the choice came from the heart. He made his senior debut in 2022 and went to the World Cup in Qatar later that year. By 2026 he had passed 30 senior caps and become a regular option at left-back.
His story belongs to a long line of players whose careers cross borders and family histories. If that's the kind of footballer you rate, add your voice to our poll of the best Black football players of all time.
Parents, ink and faith
His father was born in Senegal and his mother is German. Their names aren't consistently published, and Jakobs hasn't pushed them into the spotlight. He has said that some of his most meaningful tattoos are his parents' names. He has also described visiting Senegal with his father and receiving an emotional welcome from relatives and local people. By his own account, his mother is no football analyst. She sends messages before games and talks with him afterwards, and that's the full extent of her match review.
His faith shows up in the same tattoos. Jakobs has called himself very religious and has mentioned a tattoo of Christ on his chest, so describing him as Christian is fair. He hasn't said much about denomination or practice, and religion isn't a big part of his public image.
On ethnicity, the accurate answer is German-Senegalese: a German upbringing with direct Senegalese roots on his father's side. He hasn't publicly named a more specific Senegalese ethnic group, so we won't guess one.
The relationship question
There is no public confirmation that Jakobs is married. Turkish entertainment outlets have speculated about his love life, but he keeps his private life private. His interviews stay on football, family and Senegal. Until he says otherwise, there's no wife to report.
