Twenty years ago an 11 year old from Pedreguer joined Valencia's academy. He's still there. Jose Gaya now wears the captain's armband at Mestalla, and this season is the last one on his current contract. For a club that has sold so many of its best players, that makes his future one of the more interesting questions in Spanish football right now.
Loyalty in modern football is usually a marketing line. With Gaya it is simply the record. He has had chances to leave and he has stayed every time.

The striker who became a full back
Here's the detail most people don't know. Gaya started out at Valencia as a centre forward, and as a young boy he reportedly scored more than 60 goals in a single year. Then the coaches moved him to left back.
It sounds like a waste of a goalscorer. It wasn't. The habits of a forward explain a lot about the player he became: the timing of his overlapping runs, the willingness to arrive in the box, the comfort on the ball in tight areas. Plenty of full backs are converted wingers. Fewer are converted strikers, and it shows in how he attacks space.
Atletico, April 2014, and no looking back
After working through the youth teams, Gaya began playing for the B side, Valencia Mestalla, around 2012. His La Liga debut came on 27 April 2014 against Atletico Madrid, and he played the full 90 minutes. That is not a gentle introduction.
Within a year he had signed a major extension, in May 2015, with a reported 50 million euro release clause attached. That clause told you what the club thought of him. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were among the clubs reportedly interested during his twenties. He renewed instead, more than once, most recently in October 2022.
Reading the 2025/26 numbers
![]()
Last season gave a fair picture of where he is at 31. Across the 2025/26 La Liga campaign he made 32 appearances, 31 of them starts, and logged 2,461 minutes. He scored once, the winner in a 1 to 0 victory over Getafe on 18 January 2026, and added 2 assists.
- Tackles: about 2.52 per 90 minutes
- Interceptions: about 0.84 per 90 minutes
- Clearances: roughly 3.03 per game
- Clean sheets: 8 in the matches he played
- Discipline: 6 yellow cards, 1 red
The honest read: this is a reliable starter, not a player in decline, but the attacking output is modest. Valencia lean on him to defend and to lead more than to create. The card count is a little high for a full back, though captains on struggling sides tend to collect bookings.
The headline moment came on 14 March 2026, away at Real Oviedo, when he made his 400th appearance for the club. Only six players had reached that mark for Valencia before him. For a defender who plays a position that punishes the body, that is a remarkable number.
What Valencia pay him, roughly
Spanish clubs don't publish individual wages, so every figure here is an estimate. Icon Polls estimates Gaya's gross salary at around 4.5 million euros a year for 2025/26, which works out to roughly 88,000 euros a week. That would make him the best paid player in the Valencia squad, which fits his status even if it is far below the top earners at Real Madrid or Barcelona.
It has been a long climb. In his early years he was reportedly earning around 500,000 euros annually. More than a decade of rising wages at one club adds up, which is why Icon Polls estimates his net worth at between $20 million and $25 million. That range accounts for career earnings plus possible endorsements and investments, none of which are publicly itemised, so treat it as an informed guess rather than a fact.
Why the price tag fell, and why it barely matters
Gaya's estimated market value now sits at 2 million to 3 million euros, a long way down from his peak in his mid twenties, when he was valued at well over 20 million euros. Age explains most of it. A contract with less than a year left explains the rest: no buyer pays big money for a player who can walk for free next summer.
But transfer value is the wrong lens for this player. Valencia are not going to sell their captain for a few million euros, and his worth to them sits in things a valuation model ignores: the dressing room, the continuity, the fact that supporters see one of their own in the armband.
A Spain career in the background
Gaya came through Spain's youth teams before his senior debut in 2018. His international career has mostly been spent behind Jordi Alba, which is no disgrace. He was named in the Euro 2020 squad (the tournament played in 2021) and was part of the group that won the 2022/23 Nations League. At club level he also lifted the Copa del Rey in 2019 and the Emirates Cup in 2014, and he captained Valencia in the 2022 Copa del Rey final, scoring in the shootout before Real Betis took the trophy.

The 2027 question
So what happens next June? Gaya will be 32. Valencia will have to decide whether a shorter, cheaper deal makes sense for a player still starting most weeks, and Gaya will have to decide whether he wants to finish where he started. Everything in his history points one way. But football careers rarely end as neatly as fans would like, and this season will tell us a lot.
