Sevilla don't hand out long contracts lightly these days. Money is tight, the squad has turned over again and again, and the club has had to lean on its own academy more than it would like to admit. So when they extended Kike Salas's deal in December 2024 to run until June 2029, it was a clear statement: this is a defender they intend to build around.
Only weeks later, Salas was briefly detained by Spanish police in a betting investigation. He has kept playing since, and he has kept starting. That tension, a player the club plainly values against a legal process that has not yet reached a conclusion, is the most interesting thing about him right now. It's also why a simple stats sheet doesn't tell the whole story.

An eleven-year-old from Moron

Moron de la Frontera is a small town in the province of Seville, and Salas left it for the Sevilla academy in 2013, aged 11. Football was already in the family: his uncle is the retired professional Victor Salas.
The route up was the traditional one. Sevilla C, then the reserve side Sevilla Atletico, where he made his senior debut on January 10, 2021. His first senior goal followed almost exactly a year later, on January 9, 2022. Nothing about that path was fast. It was steady, and that steadiness is still a fair description of how he plays.
Tenerife, then the number 4 shirt
His La Liga debut came on September 10, 2022, in a 3 to 2 away win at Espanyol. Rather than let him sit on the bench, Sevilla loaned him to CD Tenerife in the Segunda Division in January 2023 for the rest of that season. It was the right call. He came back with regular minutes behind him and worked his way into the starting lineup.
The 2024/25 campaign was his breakout as a fixture: 31 league appearances, 25 starts, 3 goals, 2 assists, 32 interceptions and 47 tackles. In the 2025/26 figures we have on record, he had made 26 La Liga appearances (24 starts), played 2,203 minutes, scored 2 goals and taken 13 shots. He committed 31 fouls but picked up only one yellow card in that stretch, a striking change from earlier seasons, and one that is hard to read without the context further down.
What the data says about his game
Left-footed centre backs are rarer than they should be, and that alone gives Salas value. A left-footer on the left of a back pair opens passing angles a right-footer has to work for. He can also drop out to left back when needed.
WhoScored's profile backs that up. His average rating for 2025/26 sits around 7.09 to 7.16, solid for a defender. The platform rates his aerial duels and key passing as "Very Strong", the second of those unusual for a centre back. Interceptions, tackling and concentration are listed as "Strong", and it flags no significant weaknesses. Stylistically, he likes to tackle, keeps the ball on the ground and clears his lines often.
At 1.88 metres he wins his share in both boxes, which explains most of his goals. He isn't a ball-playing star in the mould of the elite La Liga defenders, but there is more to his distribution than his reputation suggests.
The FC 26 card
In EA Sports FC 26 he sits at 75 to 76 overall depending on the update, listed at centre back. That's a sensible budget option for anyone running a La Liga side in Ultimate Team: physical, positionally reasonable, not a difference-maker. Football Manager 2026 lists his wages at around 21,000 pounds a week and his release clause at about 43.2 million euros. Treat both as game data, not club figures.
The January 2025 detention
In January 2025, Spanish police briefly detained Salas and two friends over allegations that he deliberately picked up yellow cards during the 2023/24 La Liga season so that people in his circle could profit from betting. Investigators pointed to 10 bookings that season, 7 of them in his last 9 matches, several in the closing minutes or stoppage time. Reports linked around 30 bets placed by acquaintances in his hometown to estimated winnings of roughly 10,000 euros.
He was released after questioning and, according to the information this article is based on, had not been formally charged. The case sits with a court in Moron de la Frontera, with the National Police Centre for Integrity in Sports and Betting leading the investigation. Sevilla said they respect the judicial process and the presumption of innocence.
That presumption matters. Nothing has been proven. But it would be dishonest to pretend the case doesn't shape how buyers, selectors and supporters see him. Until it is resolved, it's the single biggest variable in his career.
Pay, net worth and the limits of estimates
Sevilla do not publish player salaries. Reports put Salas's gross pay at an estimated 2 million euros a year for 2025/26, roughly 40,000 euros a week before tax. That would place him in the middle of the club's wage structure, which fits a homegrown regular who earned improved terms with his 2024 extension.
Icon Polls estimates his net worth at between 5 million and 8 million dollars in 2026, based on several years of professional wages, bonuses and any endorsement income. There is no official figure, and given his age and Sevilla's modest pay scale relative to Real Madrid or Barcelona, the lower half of that range is arguably the safer bet.
Eight million euros, and a contract to 2029
A market value of about 8 million euros looks low for a 24-year-old left-footed starter with a contract running three more years. Part of that is Sevilla's weakened bargaining position in recent seasons. Part of it, surely, is uncertainty around the investigation. If the case closes without consequences and he keeps playing at this level, a move into double figures is realistic. If it doesn't, the number becomes almost irrelevant.
Spain Under 21 and what comes next
Salas was called up to Spain's Under 21 side between 2024 and 2025. A senior call-up hasn't arrived, and Spain are not short of centre backs. Still, left-footers who can also play left back tend to get a look eventually. He's at the age where the next two seasons decide whether he's a dependable La Liga starter or something more.
Where would a defender like Salas rank among the game's greats? Nowhere near the top yet, but that debate never gets old. Have your say in our vote for the best football players of all time.
Three quick answers
Is Kike Salas still at Sevilla?
Yes. He has remained a regular starter and is under contract until June 30, 2029.
Was he charged in the betting case?
He was detained and questioned in January 2025, then released. Based on the information available to us, no formal charges had been filed, and the investigation was ongoing.
Why is his left foot such a big deal?
Left-footed centre backs are relatively scarce, and they make it easier to build play from the left side. It also lets Salas cover at left back, which adds to his value.
