There's no quiet way to come back to Athens. Levi Garcia spent more than four seasons as one of AEK's most dangerous attackers, won the 2023 double there and left for Spartak Moscow in a deal reported at around €18 million to €19 million. On 5 August 2026 he returned to the Greek capital. This time he signed for Panathinaikos, one of AEK's biggest rivals.
It's a one-year loan with an option to buy, and it's one of the more interesting storylines of the Greek season. Nobody doubts what Garcia can do when he's right. The question, as it has been for a while, is how often he'll be right.

The Long Road to AEK
Garcia's career began at home with T&TEC SC and Central FC before AZ Alkmaar brought him to the Netherlands in 2016. He was a teenager in a demanding league, and the move didn't make him a regular straight away. A loan at Excelsior followed. Then he went to Israel, where spells with Ironi Kiryat Shmona and Beitar Jerusalem gave him something he needed more than prestige: steady senior minutes.
AEK Athens signed him in September 2020, and that's where the player people now recognise took shape. He arrived as a wide attacker. Over time he moved inside and became a centre-forward who could run beyond defenders, hold off a challenge and finish. The numbers back it up: 56 goals and 27 assists in 160 appearances. In 2023 he helped AEK win the Super League and the Greek Cup.
Moscow, and Why the Price Fell
Spartak Moscow paid a major fee in February 2025. Garcia made 48 appearances for the club, scored goals in Russia and was part of the side that won the Russian Cup. That's a reasonable return, not a failure.
Even so, his market value was estimated at about €7 million by May 2026, well below what Spartak paid. Read that as a comment on age as much as form. At 28, Garcia isn't valued for what he might become or what he might be sold for later. He's valued for what he can deliver this season. For a club like Panathinaikos, that's exactly the kind of player you want to try on loan first.
Why the Loan Suits Everyone
The deal structure is sensible. Panathinaikos gets a full season to judge Garcia before deciding whether to make the move permanent. Spartak keeps a contracted asset until June 2028 and gives him the chance to rebuild his value. Garcia goes back to a league he knows, where he understands the pressure and the rivalries, and he gets another shot at trophies and European football.
The awkward part is the shirt. Players who cross between Athens rivals get judged harder, and AEK supporters won't forget where he made his name. If he scores early, that history becomes part of the story. If he doesn't, it becomes the only story.
The Injury File
This is the real caveat. Garcia's game depends on acceleration, power and explosive runs, either through the middle or from wide, and that style puts a lot of strain on the body. His toughest spell came at AEK in 2023/24, when a muscle tear, bruising and other setbacks kept interrupting him. Earlier in his career he had a femoral fracture that kept him out for close to two months.
The encouraging news is that Russia was calmer. His only recorded absence in 2025/26 was in November 2025: about 16 days and one missed match. No major long-term injury was reported when he joined Panathinaikos. Our view is that a fit Garcia is one of the most awkward forwards to face in Greece. It's the word "fit" that Panathinaikos is betting on.

Icon Polls estimates Garcia's net worth at €7 million to €9 million. That's an editorial estimate based on his contracts in Greece and Russia, his transfer history, his international career and likely bonuses. His personal finances are not public.
His Spartak salary has been estimated at roughly £2.13 million a year, or about £41,000 a week. That figure comes from estimates, not from any club disclosure. How the loan splits his wages between Spartak and Panathinaikos hasn't been confirmed, so any precise number you see for his Athens salary is a guess.
A Family of Footballers
Football runs through the Garcia household. Levi's brothers Nathaniel and Judah both play professionally. Nathaniel has played club football in Trinidad and Tobago and has been around the national-team setup. Judah, the younger brother, is an attacking player who has represented his country and spent part of his own career in Greece. The family is also connected to Isaiah Garcia, another Trinidad and Tobago footballer. Levi is the best known of them, but he's far from the only one with a professional career.
