Goalkeepers are allowed to be patient. Contracts are not. Rafael Romero Morilla has been at Sevilla since the summer of 2023, and his deal runs until June 2027. That leaves this season, roughly nine months, for the 23 year old to convince the club he's worth keeping. Otherwise somebody else gets him for free, the same way Sevilla did.
That is the real story here. He isn't a household name, and on current evidence he isn't close to the first team. But he has the frame clubs look for in a keeper, a steady academy path behind him, and a decision coming that will shape the next five years of his career.

Jerez, then Granada
Romero comes from Jerez de la Frontera, a city better known abroad for sherry than for goalkeepers. Football runs deep across the Cadiz province, though, and Andalusia has a long habit of producing players for the big clubs of the south.
His formative years were spent at Granada CF, where he worked through the youth setup and into the reserve team, Recreativo Granada. He was on Granada's books in 2022/23, the season the first team won the Segunda Division title and went back up to La Liga. It's fair to say he was part of the club that year. It would be a stretch to call it his trophy, since his football was played mostly with the B team.
A free signing and a slow climb
In July 2023 his Granada contract expired and Sevilla picked him up as a free agent. No fee changed hands. He started with Sevilla FC III, the club's third team, before moving up to Sevilla Atletico in the Primera RFEF, the third tier of Spanish football.
Progress since then has been gradual. He has made around seven appearances for Sevilla Atletico across 2024/25 and 2025/26, with one clean sheet in that run. He has also been named on the bench for a handful of La Liga matches, which tells you the senior staff know who he is. A seat on the bench is a signal, not a debut, and he hasn't yet made the step onto the pitch in the top flight.
Seven games in two seasons is not a sample. It's a glimpse. Anyone claiming to know exactly how good Romero is should be treated with suspicion.
What 1.92 metres buys a goalkeeper
Height isn't everything, but in goal it opens doors. At 1.92 m and around 82 kg, Romero has reach for the top corners and the presence to claim crosses in a crowded box. Those who have watched him in the reserve league point to his shot stopping and his calm when the ball comes back to his feet. That second part matters more every year: right footed keepers who can play out from the back are now the norm at clubs like Sevilla, not a luxury.
He has also had the benefit of training around a senior goalkeeping group that has included the Greek international Odysseas Vlachodimos. Daily sessions next to an experienced keeper won't show up in any stats table, but they are a large part of why young keepers stay at big clubs instead of leaving early.
There are rough edges, as you'd expect. Twenty three is young for an outfield player on the fringes and very young for a keeper, a position where many don't peak until their late twenties or early thirties. Time is on his side. Minutes are not.
Wages and worth, with caveats
Sevilla have never published Romero's salary, so any figure is a guess. Reserve players at a club of Sevilla's size are generally thought to earn somewhere between 50,000 and 150,000 euros a year, and Romero most likely sits inside that bracket rather than anywhere near the first team pay scale, where wages run into the millions.
Icon Polls estimates his net worth at between $300,000 and $700,000, based on his earnings at Granada and Sevilla plus any bonuses. Treat that as a broad range. Being honest about it, the lower half looks more realistic for a player who has spent his senior career in reserve football so far. The upper end assumes a fairly generous contract and very little spending.
Why 50,000 euros is the honest number
Football data platforms put his market value at roughly 50,000 euros. That sounds low for a 1.92 m keeper at a historic La Liga club, but it's simply what limited senior minutes and a short contract produce. Buyers pay for evidence, and right now there isn't much of it.
Goalkeeper valuations tend to move in jumps rather than steady climbs. A run of regular starts, at Sevilla Atletico or on loan elsewhere, can change his price quickly. Running down a deal does the opposite: by next spring, any club can talk to him about a free move.
The decision Sevilla have to make
Sevilla have three realistic options, and so does Romero:
- Extend and loan. Tie him to a new deal and send him somewhere he plays every week. This is the classic route for young keepers, and probably the smartest.
- Keep him as cover. Leave him as third choice and reserve team starter. Safe for the club, slow for the player.
- Let him walk. If no extension comes, he leaves in June 2027, exactly the way he arrived.
