A surname Hungarian fans already knew
Sallai was born into football. His father, Tibor Sallai, played professionally, and his uncle Sándor Sallai won more than 50 caps for Hungary and played at World Cups. His route to the top was not a straight line. An early move to Palermo brought him to Italy for the 2016/17 season, and a productive spell with APOEL in Cyprus followed. Neither stop made him famous, but together they gave him senior minutes and a platform.
Freiburg signed him in 2018, and the six seasons that followed were the making of him. How a winger became a right-back
