What Is Victor Nelsson Worth After Two Italian Loans Came Back Unsold? (2026)

Two Serie A clubs had Victor Nelsson on loan with a purchase price already agreed. Roma could have bought him for €10 million. Hellas Verona could have done it for €8 million. Neither did. So in the summer of 2026 the Danish centre-back went back to Galatasaray, the club where he had won league titles and played more than 100 competitive matches, with one year left on his contract and a point to prove.

That is why he is worth watching right now. He turns 28 on 14 October, which is still young for a defender, and the decision about his next contract could shape the best remaining years of his career. Here is where his money, his market value and his options stand.

The basics, in one table

Hornbæk, with his father on the touchline

Nelsson grew up in Hornbæk and started at the local club, Hornbæk IF, where his father was one of his early coaches. He moved on to FC Nordsjælland, a club known for trusting young players, and made his Danish Superliga debut at 17.

That early start mattered. By the time FC Copenhagen paid a significant domestic fee for him in 2019, he was already regarded as one of the most promising defenders in the country. Two seasons in the capital gave him European football and a regular starting role. In August 2021, Galatasaray made him a permanent signing.

Istanbul, then Rome, then Verona, then Istanbul again

The Galatasaray years were the high point. Nelsson became a regular, played in Europe, won domestic titles and for a spell was one of the club's most valuable defenders, attracting interest from stronger leagues. A move to Sevilla in 2023 got as far as travel arrangements before collapsing.

Then things became less settled. In February 2025, Roma took him on loan for a €500,000 fee with an option to buy set at €10 million plus possible bonuses. Galatasaray extended his contract to June 2027 as part of that arrangement, protecting their asset while he chased minutes in Italy. Roma did not take up the option.

For 2025/26 he went to Hellas Verona on another loan: a €650,000 fee, possible bonuses and an €8 million purchase option. Verona also let it lapse. By July 2026 he was back training with Galatasaray's first team, and he travelled to the club's preseason camp in Austria and played in friendlies.

A loan that ends without a purchase is not automatically a verdict on a player. Two in a row, though, send a message, and it is one Nelsson will want to answer on the pitch.

What the money looks like

His estimated gross fixed salary for 2026/27 is about €1.38 million a year, or roughly €26,500 a week before tax and bonuses. Galatasaray have not published the full contract, so treat that as a solid reference point rather than a payslip.

Icon Polls estimates Nelsson's net worth at between €7 million and €10 million. That figure is our editorial estimate, built from his contracts in Denmark and Türkiye, his Galatasaray earnings, loan arrangements and international income. No official figure exists, and his private finances have never been made public.

The 2027 problem

The 2026/27 season is the last guaranteed year of his deal, which leaves Galatasaray with three realistic paths:

  • Renew him, if he wins back a meaningful role in the squad.
  • Sell him before the contract runs down, while a fee is still possible.
  • Let him walk as a free agent in the summer of 2027.

No new long-term extension had been confirmed by the time he rejoined preseason. For Nelsson, the last option is not necessarily bad news. A free transfer at 28 can produce a better contract than a sale ever would, because the signing club has no fee to recover.

Why €6 million is a floor, not a price tag

His market value was estimated at about €6 million in late May 2026, well below his peak. The reasons are easy to list: consecutive loans, no permanent home in Serie A and a contract entering its final year.

But a market valuation is not what a club will actually pay. Contract timing, squad needs and competing interest all move real fees up or down. A full, steady season would do more for his value than any argument on paper.

How he defends

Nelsson is not a centre-back who makes things look elaborate. At 1.85 metres he is not the tallest at the elite level, but he competes hard for first contact, likes to stay tight to a striker and has described himself as someone who enjoys winning rough challenges. Supporters who value commitment over flourish tend to like him for exactly that.

He is comfortable in a back four or a back three and can step into defensive midfield if needed, though central defence is clearly home. Spells in Denmark, Türkiye and Italy have given him a feel for very different defensive systems. Eighteen caps and a crowded queue

Nelsson came through every Denmark youth level and made more than 30 appearances for the Under-21 side, with tournament experience along the way. By 2026 he had 18 senior caps.

That number is lower than his early promise suggested, largely because Denmark has had several centre-backs playing in major European leagues. Regular club football is the only real route back into that conversation.

Family, kept at arm's length

Nelsson has a long-term partner, but he keeps his private life private, and public descriptions of whether the couple are married have been inconsistent. No legal marriage has been clearly confirmed. The couple has a child.

The one time family life spilled into football news was his own telling of the collapsed Sevilla move in 2023, when he revealed that a flight and a midwife had been arranged for his pregnant partner. Otherwise, he leaves that side of life out of the headlines.

How old is Victor Nelsson?

He was born on 14 October 1998, so he is 27 and turns 28 on 14 October 2026.

Why did Roma and Verona not buy him?

Neither club has given a detailed public explanation. Both loans included purchase options, €10 million plus bonuses for Roma and €8 million for Verona, and neither was used.

Can Nelsson leave Galatasaray for free?

Yes, if nothing changes. His contract expires on 30 June 2027, and unless he signs an extension or is sold first, he would be free to join another club that summer.
