Eleven Seconds, Two World Titles, One Comeback That Never Came: Zolani Tete (1988 to 2026)

Zolani Tete was supposed to fight again on November 29, 2026. His four-year doping ban was nearly over, his manager had a date pencilled in, and a southpaw who once ended a world title fight in eleven seconds was about to find out what he had left. He never got the chance. On the evening of August 21, 2026, Tete was shot and killed outside his home in Mdantsane, the Eastern Cape township that made him. He was 38.

His career deserves more than a crime report, and so does the honest version of it: a fighter of real brilliance, a positive drug test that stalled everything, and a family man from one of South Africa's great boxing towns.

The facts at a glance

Mdantsane made him

Mdantsane, near East London, has a habit of producing fighters. Tete grew up idolising two of its best, Vuyani Bungu and Welcome Ncita, and started boxing at eight alongside his brother Makazole, who also went on to box. The nickname "Last Born" came from being the youngest in the family. His father was a pastor.

He learned the trade at the Eyethu Boxing Club under trainer Mzi Mnguni and later worked with Bungu himself. Tete claimed more than 400 amateur bouts with just three defeats. That number can't be independently checked, but nobody who watched him punch doubted he'd spent a childhood in gyms. He turned professional in May 2006, aged 18.

Even with stretches spent training and fighting in England, he kept coming back to Mdantsane. He never fought under any flag but South Africa's.

Kobe, Liverpool and a prosthetic leg

The first world title came on the road. On July 18, 2014, Tete stopped Teiru Kinoshita in the tenth round in Kobe, Japan, to win the vacant IBF super flyweight belt. In March 2015 he went to Liverpool and knocked out Paul Butler in eight.

What he did with that purse tells you more than the fight did. His mother, Nomonde, had lost a leg in a childhood accident. Tete used part of his earnings to buy her a prosthetic one. Plenty of fighters talk about doing it for their families. He did it in the most literal way possible.

Eleven seconds in Belfast

At bantamweight, Tete became WBO champion in 2017, and on November 18 that year he defended the belt against fellow South African Siboniso Gonya in Belfast. One right hook from the southpaw stance, and it was over in eleven seconds. Guinness recognised it as the fastest knockout in a world title fight. It still is.

That stoppage made him briefly famous outside boxing, but his best attribute was less flashy. At 5 ft 9 in with a 72 inch reach, he was unusually long for a bantamweight, and he used that length well. He beat Mikhail Aloyan in 2018 in the World Boxing Super Series, then injury pulled him out of the tournament, and he lost the WBO title to John Riel Casimero in 2019.

The test that stopped the clock

His last fight was a win over Jason Cunningham at Wembley Arena in London on July 2, 2022. Afterwards he tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. UK Anti-Doping handled the case and he was banned for four years.

It's a real stain on the record, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. It also cost him what should have been his late prime. By the time the ban ended he'd be 38, and the November comeback was always going to be a long shot. It was still his to attempt.

What police have said

According to Eastern Cape police, Tete arrived home at about 6:30 PM on August 21 and was waiting for his gate to open when two armed men in balaclavas got out of a vehicle and opened fire. He drove into the yard trying to escape and died at the scene. A 27-year-old woman in the car with him suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital. Authorities have not publicly identified her, and we won't speculate.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana and his manager Mlandeli Tengimfene confirmed the death, and a murder case was opened. When we first reported the story, no arrests had been made and no motive had been established. We have not confirmed any developments since, so treat later reports from official sources as the ones to rely on.

The family he left

Tete married his wife, Lisa, in Mdantsane in November 2018, while he was WBO champion, and the couple had a daughter. He shared family moments publicly and was known as a devoted father. Beyond that, the family's grief is their own, and we'll leave it there.

What he was worth, honestly

No official figure exists. Some websites put Tete's fortune at $2.5 million to $7 million, which looks inflated for a fighter in the lighter divisions, where purses are a fraction of heavyweight money. Icon Polls estimates his net worth at his death at $1 million to $3 million, built mostly on his IBF and WBO title fights and his World Boxing Super Series run, and reduced by four years without earning in the ring.
