Valencia have had a turbulent few years, and turbulent clubs need someone who simply turns up and does the job. Cesar Tarrega is that someone. He doesn't trend, he doesn't dribble past five players, and he rarely scores. He heads the ball away, reads the danger early and does it again the following weekend. In early 2026 the club rewarded him with a contract running to June 2030, which tells you more about his standing at Mestalla than any highlight reel could.
Icon Polls rates him among the most underrated young defenders in Spanish football heading into the 2026/27 season. The numbers back that up. So does the path he took to get here.

From Don Bosco to the first team
Aldaia sits just outside Valencia, so this is a local story in the most literal sense. Tarrega started at CD Don Bosco, playing there from 2013 to 2016, before moving into Levante's youth ranks and spending a spell at Patacona around 2017 to 2018. He didn't land at Valencia's academy until 2019, when he was already 17. That's late by the standards of elite Spanish academies, and it makes what followed more impressive.
By 2021 he was playing senior football with Valencia's reserve side. The physical tools were obvious from the start, but it was his decision making that earned him a look with the first team. Tall defenders are common. Tall defenders who stay calm and keep things simple are not.
Valladolid, the detour that counted
In January 2024 Valencia loaned him to Real Valladolid for the second half of the 2023/24 season. He made 16 appearances, scored once, picked up four yellow cards and one red. Not flawless, but that's the point of a loan: regular minutes, mistakes made somewhere other than Mestalla, and a return home with more experience. He was earning around 120,000 euros a year at the time, a figure that looks almost quaint now.
Six clearances a game
Since coming back, Tarrega has been close to an ever-present under Carlos Corberan. The headline figures from his two full LaLiga seasons with Valencia:
| Season | Apps | Goals | Yellow cards | Clearances |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024/25 | 34 (all starts) | 2 | 7 | 218 |
| 2025/26 | 32 | 2 | 8 | 194 |
In 2025/26 he added 42 tackles, 29 interceptions and nine clean sheets, and averaged over six clearances a match. That's an outstanding rate for any centre back in Europe. It also hints at Valencia's reality: a side that spends long spells without the ball needs a defender who relishes that work. Tarrega clearly does.
He played more than 3,000 minutes in 2024/25, and he has been durable. A muscle problem in December 2024 and a knee injury in late December 2025, which cost him about two weeks, are the only notable blips. Add nine Copa del Rey appearances over several seasons and you have a defender Corberan treats as one of the first names on the team sheet.
The honest caveat: he contributes little going forward, with no assists in LaLiga across those two seasons. If you want a ball-playing centre back who steps into midfield, he isn't that. If you want someone to defend the box, he's exactly that.
What Valencia pay him, and what he's worth
No official salary figure is published, so these are estimates. His gross pay for 2025/26 is reported at around 1.6 million euros a year, roughly 32,000 euros a week. That's a big jump from his Valladolid days, though he still earns considerably less than senior figures such as Jose Gaya.
Icon Polls estimates his net worth at between $2 million and $5 million, taking in salary, bonuses and other earnings. It's a modest figure by top-flight standards, which makes sense for a 24-year-old who only recently signed his first major deal.
His estimated market value of about 14.5 million euros as of mid-2026 has risen steadily, and that June 2030 contract means any club wanting him would have to pay properly. A senior Spain call-up or a Valencia return to European football would likely push that number higher.
The console version
Gamers rate him higher than the transfer market does. Football Manager 2026 lists his in-game value at 31 million euros, and EA Sports FC 26 gives him a 75 overall with 83 potential. That potential figure suggests the game makers see a defender still on the way up.
The Spain question
Tarrega earned his first Spain under-21 call-ups in 2025, making four appearances and scoring a goal. The senior squad is a crowded room for centre backs, so nothing is guaranteed. Still, a defender with his consistency, height and LaLiga minutes is firmly in the conversation, and Icon Polls considers him a serious candidate if his form holds.
