Ipswich Paid 4 Million Euros, Then Sent Him to Valencia: Kayne van Oevelen's Story So Far (2026)

Most clubs don't spend 4 million euros on a goalkeeper and then hand him to someone else within a month. Ipswich Town did exactly that with Kayne van Oevelen this summer. That tells you a lot about how they see him. He isn't a stopgap. He's a project, and Valencia now get to run the next stage of it.

It's a big jump for a keeper who, not long ago, wasn't a keeper at all.

A late convert to the gloves

Van Oevelen played outfield until he was 14. Then he went in goal and never came back out. Plenty of keepers start that way, but it shows in his game more than most: Valencia singled out his composure with the ball at his feet when they announced the loan, and it's hard not to connect that to the years he spent as an outfield player.

He came through AFC Amsterdam before joining FC Volendam's academy in 2021, aged 17. He made 16 appearances for Jong Volendam in that first season, signed a three year professional contract in 2022, and made his Eredivisie debut against Go Ahead Eagles in May 2024. Steady, not spectacular. Then things sped up.

Two seasons that made the case

In 2024/25 he became Volendam's first choice and helped them win promotion from the Eerste Divisie. The return: 28 league games, 10 clean sheets and a save percentage of around 80.3%. For a second tier keeper that is a very strong number.

2025/26 was harder. Volendam went down after one season back in the Eredivisie, and van Oevelen played 32 matches with a save percentage of roughly 73.5%. That drop is worth being honest about. A keeper on a team facing a lot of shots in a top flight will usually see his percentage fall, and a relegated side rarely flatters anyone. Still, scouts clearly looked past the league table. By the time he left, he had around 96 senior appearances to his name.

Valencia's announcement went further, saying he ranks among the keepers with the highest save percentages in European leagues since he broke into senior football. Clubs always talk up new signings, but that is a specific claim, and it lines up with his promotion season.

Why Ipswich bought, then lent

The deal came together in July 2026. Volendam reportedly turned down an opening bid of about 3 million euros before settling at around 4 million, with Valencia and FC Twente also said to be interested. Ipswich, back in the Premier League, gave him a five year contract running to 2031.

The catch was Kjell Scherpen. Ipswich already had their number one, and a 23 year old sitting on the bench for a year helps nobody. So in August he went to Valencia on a season long loan with no option to buy. That last part matters. If he plays well in La Liga, the benefit goes back to Ipswich, not to Valencia.

Valuation sites currently put his market value at roughly 1.3 million to 2 million euros, well below what Ipswich paid. That gap is the bet. Ipswich are paying for where they think he'll be in two or three years, not where he is today.

What Valencia are getting

Start with the obvious: at 1.99 metres he is one of the tallest goalkeepers in European football, and Valencia cited his aerial ability as a key reason for the move. At around 84 kg he isn't a beanpole either. Add the footwork and reflexes the club also highlighted, and you can see why he appealed.

He won't walk into the side, though. Stole Dimitrievski is Valencia's established first choice, and Cristian Rivero is also in the goalkeeping group. Van Oevelen has to earn minutes. If he gets them, he'll become only the second Dutch goalkeeper to play for Valencia after Jasper Cillessen, who made 57 appearances for the club. He is the ninth Dutch player to join Los Che overall.

On fitness, there's nothing to worry about so far. No significant injuries were reported when he signed, and he got through a full 32 match season at Volendam in 2025/26.

The money question

His salary at Ipswich hasn't been made public, and anyone quoting an exact figure is guessing. Wage tracking sites suggested he earned around 2,000 pounds a week at Volendam. A move to a Premier League club almost certainly meant a big raise, though as a development signing rather than a starter he's unlikely to be near the top of Ipswich's wage bill.

Taking his career earnings and new contract into account, Icon Polls estimates his net worth at $1.5 million to $3 million. Treat that as a rough guide, not a verified number. The bigger financial story is ahead of him: a good year in Spain could change his market value, and his wages, quickly.

The road so far

  • Before 2021: Youth football at AFC Amsterdam, switching to goal at 14.
  • 2021: Joins Volendam's academy, 16 games for Jong Volendam.
  • 2022: First professional contract, three years.
  • May 2024: Eredivisie debut against Go Ahead Eagles.
  • 2024/25: First choice, promotion, 10 clean sheets in 28 league games.
  • 2025/26: 32 matches as Volendam are relegated.
  • July 2026: Joins Ipswich Town for about 4 million euros on a deal to 2031.
  • August 2026: Season long loan to Valencia, no buy option.

Is he on a path to the very top? Too early to say, and that's partly why he's interesting. If you've got opinions on who really belongs in the conversation, cast your vote for the best football players of all time.

Still wondering?

Has he played for the Netherlands?

Not at senior level as of the time of his Valencia move. A strong La Liga season would put him in a much better position for a call up.

Can Valencia keep him after the loan?

Not through this deal. There's no option to buy, so he returns to Ipswich, where his contract runs until 2031.

Who is he up against at Valencia?

Stole Dimitrievski is the first choice, with Cristian Rivero also part of the goalkeeping group.
